The Challenge of IoT Integration in Industrial Environments

Industrial sites increasingly rely on IoT sensors for environmental monitoring, asset tracking, and predictive maintenance. However, integrating these sensors into existing SCADA systems has traditionally been a complex and costly endeavor.

Most LoRaWAN deployments require a separate Network Server (LNS), a cloud platform, and custom middleware to bridge the gap between IoT data and SCADA systems. This creates data silos, adds latency, and multiplies the number of systems that IT/OT teams must manage.

A New Approach: Embedded Network Server

The LoRaWAN IoT Module for Ignition takes a fundamentally different approach. Instead of relying on external infrastructure, the module embeds its own LoRaWAN Network Server directly within Ignition.

This means you only need two things to get started:

  • A LoRaWAN gateway for radio coverage at your sensor locations
  • The LoRaWAN IoT Module installed on your Ignition server

No third-party LNS, no cloud subscription, no middleware. Your sensor data flows directly into Ignition tags, ready to be historized, alarmed on, and visualized alongside your existing SCADA data.

Key Capabilities

Device Management

Register and manage all your LoRaWAN devices from the Ignition Gateway. The module handles OTAA and ABP join modes, device profiles, and automatic provisioning. Each device appears as a structured tag tree in Ignition Designer.

Payload Decoding

Raw LoRaWAN payloads are automatically decoded into meaningful values. The module supports custom JavaScript decoders for any sensor type, so whether you are reading temperature, humidity, CO2, pressure, or GPS coordinates, the data arrives in Ignition ready to use.

Full Ignition Integration

Once sensor data is in Ignition, you have access to the full platform:

  • Tag Historian for long-term data storage and trend analysis
  • Alarming to trigger notifications when sensor values exceed thresholds
  • Perspective and Vision for building real-time dashboards
  • Reporting for automated PDF reports on sensor data
  • Scripting with dedicated functions like `system.lorawan.getDevices()` and `system.lorawan.sendDownlink()`

Use Cases

Environmental Monitoring

Deploy temperature, humidity, and CO2 sensors across a facility. Monitor cold chain compliance, cleanroom conditions, or warehouse environments from a single Ignition dashboard.

Water and Utilities Management

Use water level sensors, flow meters, and pressure sensors connected via LoRaWAN to monitor remote water infrastructure. Detect leaks, track consumption, and trigger alarms without wiring.

Smart Building

Door/window sensors, occupancy detectors, and energy meters feed data into Ignition for building management. Combine IoT data with existing BMS systems for a unified view.

Asset Tracking

GPS trackers and vibration sensors connected over LoRaWAN provide real-time asset location and condition monitoring, all visible in Ignition Perspective on any device.

Private Network, Full Control

Because the Network Server is embedded in Ignition, your entire LoRaWAN infrastructure remains private. No data leaves your network unless you choose to share it. This is a key advantage for industries with strict data sovereignty requirements such as defense, utilities, and critical infrastructure.

Getting Started

The LoRaWAN IoT Module is available for download from OperaMetrix. Installation follows the standard Ignition module process:

1. Download the `.modl` file

2. Install it via the Ignition Gateway

3. Point your LoRaWAN gateway to the Ignition server

4. Register your devices and configure payload decoders

5. Start building dashboards with live IoT data
